Summer Reading – 5th Grade

Dear Class of 2024 Families,

It’s time for a well-deserved summer break, and many of you have already inquired about summer reading. Rising 5th Grade students are tasked with reading 2 books: ONE required book and ONE book of their choice.

The required reading is: The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise by Dan Gemeinhart

This book and all the books on the suggested reading list are middle grade fiction, which is generally recognized as fiction written for readers aged 8-12. Common themes in middle grade literature are: friendship, family relationships, physical changes, school experiences, and a growing awareness of the world outside oneself. Though often identified as most interesting to young adolescents, many adults enjoy this genre as well; as such, I encourage you to read and discuss the books your child chooses to explore this summer. Common Sense Media is an excellent website that offers tools, such as parent guides and discussion questions, to help you talk about these books with your child.

For their free choice book, students are encouraged to choose books that truly interest them. The Rhode Island Middle Grade Book Award Nominees List offers engaging and diverse choices, and your local library will have excellent recommendations as well. Students should also feel free to select books that do not appear on any of these lists – the important thing is that they read, read, read!

I encourage students to summarize each chapter as they read; a sticky note at the end of each chapter is one strategy that is helpful for remembering main ideas upon our return in September.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email me; I will be checking my email periodically throughout the summer. I wish you all a safe and relaxing summer break!

We came to St. Michael’s for two reasons – the incredible arts programs that the school has, and for Phil Tutino.  Too many schools are cutting back on their arts programs, but St. Michael’s understands the value of balancing rigorous academic study with a foundation in the arts. This has

The concept of a St. Michael’s community is a big draw for me. It’s not just a place to drop off your kids for the day, it’s also the center of the social universe for our family.

My youngest son just joined the PK, and my favorite memory to date is a picture of him balancing on a tree stump while doing a tree pose with his eyes closed – love that he’s already learning to “center” himself and grateful for the PK teachers for sending us

From the first day of school to the last day of school, my child is HAPPY to go to school. I can remember a project they did in 5th grade about food trucks. The class was presenting in early June, and my son bounced out of bed on presentation day.
