At St. Michael’s, we are intentional with our students about how to interact respectfully and productively in a group and in the community. We use Responsive Classroom to guide these intentional experiences.
In the Lower School, each class begins with a morning meeting that truly sets the tone for the day. During morning meetings, students feel the value that community brings each and every morning through shared greetings, messages, and collaborative activities. At the beginning of the school year, our students set goals and talk about their hopes and dreams for the year. Our teachers talk with each student about what needs to happen in order for their goals to be reached and and guide them through the achievement of those goals.
The Middle School utilizes the advisor program to support and continue the work done in Lower School with Responsive Classroom. We use The Responsive Advisory Meeting Book from Responsive Classroom. These are middle school level Responsive Classroom practices which “support students in building positive, meaningful relationships with one or more caring adults in the school, help students develop positive relationships with their peers, and provides a safe place for students to strengthen their academic and social-emotional competencies, explore their interests more deeply, and nurtures the development of new skills and talents.”
