Military Families

ACTIVE MILITARY DISCOUNT

St. Michael’s is proud of its long, historical connection to the US military and US military families in Newport. Each year, the school enrolls fifteen to twenty five students from families connected to the United States Naval War College and other service related duties. US military families bring a rich trove of national and international diversity to our community and enrich the experience of all our students.

The school has been exceptionally supportive to US military families through financial assistance. While classroom spaces and tuition assistance funds are available, active military families who apply for financial assistance can expect to receive support commensurate with their families’ need. St. Michael’s Country Day School’s military discount for U.S. families on active duty is 50% for students in grades Kindergarten – Grade 8. (We will offer a 25% military discount for families who have children in the Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten programs).

“There are a lot of things to consider when you are a military family, on to your next duty station, living off of 1 income, and you have a child that doesn’t take change well AT ALL. When we first arrived in Rhode Island my daughter was 3 and she wasn’t talking to anyone. We toured the school and my daughter happen to run into what would be her preschool teacher. She talked! My husband and I took notice and immediately decided she should go here. We were a 1 income military family, but St. Michaels offers a generous military discount which helped cement our decision. My daughter began to thrive. The school helped to nurture and encourage her. The fact that she was in the same school and would see the same people from preschool on up until the time our orders were over was really important to me.

It was also important to me that my daughter not get “lost” or be just another kid in the school. SMS operates more like a tight family unit. They recognize every kid individually and their parents. The buddy system at the school only helped and encouraged my daughter to be more comfortable. My husband and I appreciate every experience our daughter had at St. Michaels for the 3 years she attended. Im sad our time in Newport came to an end before my son had a chance to start preschool there.

I would highly recommend anyone who is looking for school in Newport consider St. Michaels. “

Dear Military Peers,

As a parent of children who have twice attended Saint Michael’s Country Day School spanning several periods between 2002 and 2015 I can enthusiastically and safely endorse the quality and dedication of this superb learning environment.

All three of my children have greatly benefitted by St Michael’s excellent and contemporary programs; two went on to top-notch high schools and are thriving while my third – in 8th grade – is applying now to a line-up of superior schools. We learned that for a rapidly moving military family where children switch schools every year or two that SMS provides an atmosphere where students can consolidate all their different learning experiences into a caring, calm but highly achievement oriented setting. The faculty is first-class, creative and multi-faceted, the campus stunning.

The fact that SMS also provides a tuition break for active military families is also a wonderful testimonial to how well-grounded and attuned this organization is to the challenges of military life and earnings. Bottom line: St Michael’s Country Day School is a great school and our children are all very lucky to have had the opportunity to learn and grow within its creative and nurturing walls.”

Military families are valued members of the St. Michael’s community. We enroll students from active duty United States as well as foreign military branches.  Our international families have come from Great Britain, Norway, Israel, Germany, Kuwait, and The Netherlands – just to name a few.

We recognize that the demands of new orders often require mid-year relocations, and we make a concerted effort to accommodate your needs if that is indeed the case. In the event that you are unable to visit campus, we can use phone, video-conference, email, and any means necessary to ensure that your questions are answered and that your hopes are fulfilled, both during the admissions process and once your child is enrolled.

We greatly honor and value the presence of our military as part of our St. Michael’s family, therefore, we have set aside financial aid monies specifically for ACTIVE U.S. MILITARY FAMILIES.

“In our experience, St. Michael’s has a great staff with dedicated teachers who are perfect in welcoming new students to the school. Children in military families are often subject to many changes in their early childhood, and the teachers and staff at St. Michael’s have done a great job reducing the stress of moving to a new location for our child.
Thank you for a great year! We hope to be able to come back at a later time and yet again be a part of the St. Michael’s family!”
All the best,
