Second graders begin their day with a Responsive Classroom Morning meeting. They start with a greeting, review the calendar, read the morning message, enjoy a daily joke/riddle and the students will sometimes do a quick share response to a question such as ‘Would you rather live in a tree or a cave?’
After the Morning Meeting, second graders begin math with a quick, whole class lesson which includes hands on materials then move on to small group work. Math concludes with partner games or ipads to reinforce a skill. Topics of study include place value, addition and subtraction with and without renaming, 2-3-4 times tables and strategies for solving word problems. After that, snack and recess-a crowd favorite!
Reading – Daily 5: After recess, students meet with their reading teams while working through their Daily 5 tasks independently. During this time, children write in their journals, read independently or with a partner, listen to stories, complete grammar assignments and even do word work. Before the 2nd graders head off to Specials, there is time for a quick read aloud or a few journal shares!
Specials are twice a day and could be Art, Design Thinking, Drama, French, Music or Technology. In Design Thinking, for example, the 2nd graders are learning to create and build arcade games out of cardboard and recycled materials.
After morning specials, lunch, recess and afternoon specials we return to class for spelling/grammar instruction followed by theme or writer’s workshop. In theme, our study of US symbols is in full swing!
Our busy day concludes with a closing meeting where we discuss what went well or what we may need to improve the next day.
