Grade 5-6 Summer Reading

St. Michael’s Summer Reading 2023

Dear families of rising 5th and 6th graders,

It’s time for a well-deserved summer break, and summer provides an excellent opportunity for students and families to enjoy great books together! Rising 5th and 6th grade students are tasked with reading TWO books of their choice for summer reading.

The goal of the summer reading program is to foster a love of reading, so students are encouraged to choose books that truly interest them and suit their independent reading ability. If your child is struggling with a book, please have them try another text that more comfortably fits their reading level. The Rhode Island Middle Grade Book Award Nominees List  offers engaging and diverse choices; your local library will also have excellent recommendations.

All the books on the suggested reading list are middle grade fiction, which is generally recognized as fiction written for readers aged 8-12. Common themes in middle grade literature are: friendship, family relationships, physical changes, school experiences, and a growing awareness of the world outside oneself. Though often identified as most interesting to young adolescents, many adults enjoy this genre as well; as such, we encourage you to read and discuss the books your child chooses to explore this summer. Common Sense Media is an excellent website that offers tools, such as parent guides and discussion questions, to help you talk about these books with your child.

Although it is not required, we recommend that students use strategies to help them to engage in the text as they read. Some strategies may include keeping a reading journal or annotating the book as they read with questions, ideas, or personal responses. Students may also benefit from reading the same title as a friend or family member and engaging in ongoing discussions about the book. These are just some helpful approaches for remembering main ideas upon our return in September. I will be checking email (kjoubert@smcds.org) periodically over the summer if you have any questions.

Have a wonderful summer!!

We came to St. Michael’s for two reasons – the incredible arts programs that the school has, and for Phil Tutino.  Too many schools are cutting back on their arts programs, but St. Michael’s understands the value of balancing rigorous academic study with a foundation in the arts. This has

The concept of a St. Michael’s community is a big draw for me. It’s not just a place to drop off your kids for the day, it’s also the center of the social universe for our family.

My youngest son just joined the PK, and my favorite memory to date is a picture of him balancing on a tree stump while doing a tree pose with his eyes closed – love that he’s already learning to “center” himself and grateful for the PK teachers for sending us
