Having developed more independent organizational skills, students check in with their advisor for announcements and some social time and then head off to their first class of the day. Today they begin their day in PE. A fitness circuit and check of their heart rate builds awareness of overall fitness and then on to a rousing game of volleyball!
Second period finds the 6th-grade in the DeRamel innovation lab using the Glowforge, power tools and 3D printer to create accessories for their costumes which they developed for Cosplay. Students are excited to share their design process, even the mistakes, with the greater community at ARTS Fest in May.
Recess and snack is still an important part of a 6th-grader’s day. Time to refuel and spend some time with friends.
World Language class intensifies with a focus on either Spanish or French and learning to be proficient speakers and writers of the target language. A lively conversation in Spanish or French ensues between class partners about a cultural highlight of Spain or France.
An application for Roman citizenship awaits students in History class and then on to creating a map illustrating the geography of Europe in the 8th century B.C.E. and the expansion of Rome until its fall in the 5th century C.E.
Office hours provide time to organize work for the day, meet with teachers or attend a student council or Green Team meeting.
Lunch and recess are a favorite time of the day as students engage in a rousing game of basketball, soccer, play in the Gaga pit, or just relax on the swings.
Students enter the science lab ready to share their iMovie presentation on the impact that climate change is having on a given geographical area. Explaining how changes in the Earth’s temperature impact the flora and fauna of an area hone those presentation skills. Peer feedback highlights areas of success and areas for continuing growth for the next presentation!
Rounding out the day in the ceramics studio, students explore design and the relationship between function and form as they create, glaze, and fire their original pieces.
The day closes with a check-in with their advisor. Time to pack up to go home. Reminders to check planners to be sure they are taking all the needed materials home are still appreciated! Then, it’s off to play practice to finalize the dialogue for the spring production!
