Fifth grade students begin their day with their advisor learning how to organize their materials for classes, talking about the day and reviewing resources available for them as they go through the day. Given that the 5th grade year is their entry into subject specific teachers and classes, their advisor is a crucial guide as they navigate this change.

As classes begin, students travel to English class where they sit in flexible seating to discuss their latest class novel or perhaps share a dramatic interpretation of their favorite scene from The Tempest.

Second period brings their ARTS elective. A rousing theater warm up leads to a character study in Introduction to Theater.

Recess and snack provide a necessary break in the day. Time to unwind, refuel and get organized for their next two classes.

Refreshed, it’s off to Science to engage in a lab about adaptations to prepare for a morning out on Narragansett Bay conducting research with Save the Bay.

Spanish class follows with a feast for Dia de los Muertos. They can hardly wait for second semester when French begins!

Office hours provide a half an hour with their advisors. Time to regroup, see teachers for extra help or questions, organize materials, check in to see how the day is going for themselves and others, start homework or engage in Responsive Classroom advisory meeting to continue to build community and learn about themselves and others.

Lunch and recess are a favorite time of the day! Fifth graders love the privilege of free choice seating and a robust recess time.

Math is next! Rich problem-solving activities, collaborative work groups and a climate of inquiry allow students to tackle a rigorous curriculum.

History rounds out the day with collaborative group work recreating an Egyptian funereal ceremony.

Advisor time ends the day. Fifth graders gain assistance gathering materials they need for homework, checking in with their advisor to debrief the day and getting ready for sports!

Jeff Gerring We came to St. Michael’s for two reasons - the incredible arts programs that the school has, and for Phil Tutino.  Too many schools are cutting back on their arts programs, but St. Michael’s understands the value of balancing rigorous academic study with a foundation in the arts.

Jeff Judson The concept of a St. Michael’s community is a big draw for me. It’s not just a place to drop off your kids for the day, it’s also the center of the social universe for our family. 1st and 4th Grade Parent St. Michael's Country Day School 5
