In a warm and intimate learning environment, our preschoolers feel comfortable expanding the boundaries of their worlds, while also building cooperative and trusting relationships with their peers and adults. Our program provides an opportunity for three year olds to socialize, play, sing and learn in a small group, while also being introduced to early academic concepts and skills that will develop in sophistication throughout their early childhood schooling.

Our preschool teachers have an excellent understanding of the unique needs of a young child’s development and provide expert guidance as they take their first steps into school. During this full day program, the children learn about colors, shapes, numbers and letters and also about sharing and taking care of their materials. The teachers combine a host of traditional approaches to classroom instruction, including Montessori approaches, as they successfully reach each student, each at their own unique pace and in their own unique style.

Every day is filled with opportunities for the children to explore, investigate, and play. Preschool students also participate in weekly creative movement classes and story time in the library. In addition to their core classroom experiences, the preschool weekly program is enriched with creative movement class, science class, physical education, and a visit to the library, as well as access to the art studio and ceramics studio, and all of these classes are taught by specialist teachers in those fields.

PreSchool is held Monday-Friday, 8:30 am – 3:00 pm

COVID 19 update — our campus is closed but #SMSstaysconnected!

At this time, there are no known cases of COVID 19 in our SMS community. As Head of School Jim Heus wrote in a letter home to parents:

“In keeping with our nation’s efforts to maintain social distancing, and consistent with Governor Raimondo’s two-week suspension of public schools throughout the state, we will launch our plan for distance learning. We have planned, rehearsed and are ready to execute ‘virtual’ instruction on Monday, March 30th.”
