Running… Sharing…Playing…Learning…Growing!

Riegel_161027_0220Our full day Pre-kindergarten program builds on those social and early-academic skills introduced in our preschool.  Each day, the children have a class meeting, enjoy a story time, and engage in a daily special-project which supports the lesson of the day.  Through play and structured learning activities, each and every day of Pre-kindergarten is filled with imagination and wonder.

The Handwriting Without Tears program is used to develop fine motor skills, phonemic awareness and alphabetic knowledge. Foundational math and literacy concepts are explored in a center-based classroom.  These learning centers include blocks, writing, crafts, letter games, books, housekeeping and puzzles. Working individually and in groups, students gain experience, develop skills, and learn independence as well as responsibility.

Pre-kindergarten children engage in thematic studies including community helpers, nutrition, the five senses and the life cycle of a butterfly. Field trips and classroom visitors enrich these explorations and provide a variety of hands on experiences.

Our Pre-kindergarten program is enriched with weekly specials classes, including art, library,  science, and creative movement, all of which are taught by specialists who work closely with the classroom teachers to connect to the learning happening in the classroom.

COVID 19 update — our campus is closed but #SMSstaysconnected!

At this time, there are no known cases of COVID 19 in our SMS community. As Head of School Jim Heus wrote in a letter home to parents:

“In keeping with our nation’s efforts to maintain social distancing, and consistent with Governor Raimondo’s two-week suspension of public schools throughout the state, we will launch our plan for distance learning. We have planned, rehearsed and are ready to execute ‘virtual’ instruction on Monday, March 30th.”
