This is your window into Technology at St. Mike’s. Most of Ms. H’s class projects start here, so pick a grade and check out what we’re doing. There are also resources for teachers and students to use at home, so use the RSS features below to stay informed!
Please show off for Ms. Weld. I told her that you would be super-stars! Here’s your checklist for the day:
Finish typing everything into the 3 Panel Brochure. Use your journals, notebooks, and the mock-up that you did with Mrs. Richards and Ms. Doane. Make sure that everything is spelled correctly and reads well.
If you get all of your typing done, go back to your Africa Brochure and see if all of your typing is done there. Make sure that everything is spelled correctly.
Once all of your typing is done, go back to GoogleEarth and finish adding all of the pushpins for your itinerary. Remember to number each one. If you have to re-name a pushpin because it says Untitled, control-click on the push pin and choose Get Info.
If you get EVERYTHING done, and Ms. Weld says that it is all written out correctly, then please be a helper for the rest of the class or do some Typing Master.
First, I would like for you to finish setting up your spreadsheets and to watch this video to verify that your formulas are correct. I would suggest that you listen to this with headphones so that you can start and stop it as you need to.
Once you have your spreadsheet set up to track your transactions, you will want to do the following:
Name Sheet #1 Transactions
Add a second sheet (Sheet #2) and name it Stock Research
Name Column A – Ticker Symbol
Name Column B – Company Name
Name Column C – What does this company do?
Name Column D – Why would you invest in this company?
Stretch the columns out so that they are easy to work with and turn on Word Wrap for columns B, C, and D
The image below will help you figure it all out.

Stock Market Research Links
Use these links, as well as any others that Mr. Hileman has told you about, to research potential stock purchases.
You may have this period to work on your Ning projects. We will try to start the stock market game work later on. Make sure that you are on target to meet Mr. McMahon’s deadlines. I have left comments on the walls of a lot of you. Be sure to read them. I have also started a thread in the discussion forum. You should respond to that thread by the end of the week.
ArtLex – this is the art dictionary for your definitions. Remember, they should be in your own words.
Grolier and Grolier for Kids – if you login to Grolier, you can click on the purple button in the top right if you need something that is easier to read. Also, use the website tabs to find information about your artist.
The Library Website – Mrs. Lux has all sorts of resources for you. Make sure that you check under Project Resources for the Art Links. Also, click on where it says AskRI and then try the button to World Book Web. The version for students may be helpful.
Good Morning! Ms. Patterson will be there with you today. I expect you to work with her to complete the following. If you finish, you may work in your groups to rehearse your shows. We will try to film as much as possible tomorrow.
Spreadsheet Columns
First, make sure that your Stock Market spreadsheet is set up correctly. Your columns should be as follows.
Column A – Ticker Symbol
Column B – Company Name
Column C – Transaction Date
Column D – Purchase Price per Share
Column E – Number of Shares Bought
Column F – Total Purchase Price
Column G – Sale Price per Share
Column H – Number of Shares Sold
Column I – Total Sale Price
Column J – Cash Balance
The goal is to be able to keep track of each of your transactions as well as your cash balance. The Stock Market Game website will help you keep track of the total value of your portfolio. Why do you think that you can’t use a spreadsheet to keep track of the value of your portfolio?
Spreadsheet Formulas
Once your columns are set up, you need to write some formulas. Remember how we learned that spreadsheets can do the math for us? This video will walk you through what you need to do. I’ve set up two samples for you to give you something to work with. Here are the details.
Row 2 – you should type 100,000 for your cash balance
Row 3 – Set up to buy 25 shares of ACME (Acme Widgets) at $3.50 per share. Don’t forget about the 2% commission. What formula could you use to calculate the total purchase price?
Row 4 – Now set up to sell 10 shares of your ACME at $3.25 per share. Again, don’t forget the 2% commission. Write a formula to calculate the total sale price.
Column J – what formula could you create so that you can have a constantly updating cash balance for each transaction line? (HINT: your formula may include blank cells)
(If you view this in full-screen, you can read all of what I have typed)
Folks, for those of you have not yet had a chance to present, you will get to go on Thursday. Here’s the new plan. Our goal is to have this project completed by spring break. In order to do this, we’re going to have to mix it up a bit.
Background: you are now the experts about a specific geographic location as well as a specific global warming issue that is plaguing that area. Think about it this way; it’s a lot like your history fair projects with a location, a topic, and a sub-topic.
Challenge: think about how can you most effectively use the media to tell the world about your place and topic. What would be the best media to use? Why? Think about your message as well as your comfort level with technology. We don’t have a ton of time. You may choose from the following media to tell the world the story of your topic (BIG HINT: this is not an oral report).
Newspaper
Magazine
Television News
Getting Started: With your partner, make a plan. Go back to your notes about newspapers and magazines. Think about if you could do a special edition. You will need to outline your story, gather your graphics, and then put the whole thing together. If you choose TV, remember that you will need to write a script, gather your visuals, film yourselves, and then edit it. On Thursday, be prepared to present your plan.
