8th Grade – Digital Storytelling Project Part #2

April 29th, 2008 by bholland

Once you have completed your Character Sketch, you need to work on your storyboards.

  1. Go to the last slide of your Character Sketch and add four (4) more Title & Bullet slides
  2. Title your slides Beginning, Problem, Climax, Ending
  3. You do not have to write in complete sentences, but I should know what is going to happen in each section of your story.

If you finish and still have time left, use the websites from the first Digital Storytelling post to look for images. If you find some, Control-Click on the image and choose Add Image to iPhoto Library.

6th Grade Circumnavigation Project Update

April 28th, 2008 by bholland

We are running out of time, so the requirements have changed. The attached PDF (portable document format) will give you the specifics that we discussed in class.
Click here to view the new voyage requirements.

I’ve also created some additional directions that may help you when you are working on your own. This is a PDF of my project with notes and details.

3rd Grade – Field Assignment #1

April 16th, 2008 by bholland

We are going to be zoologists, studying everything there is to know about our desert or Australian animals.

First, we need to go get a picture for our cover. To do this, we will go to Arkive.

Next, we need to map where our animal lives. We are going to use Google Maps for this.

7th Grade – Media Project Part 2

April 11th, 2008 by bholland

What happened in the Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925? What role did the media play? (Hint: what type of media was even present?) What role would modern media play?

This website, from the University of Missouri, has a good summary of what happened during the trial.

Now, take a look at how the debate still rages on in schools today. Have one person in your group read each article. This will give you a broad set of knowledge.

  1. New York Times – Evolution’s Backers in Kansas Start Counter Attack
  2. The Dallas Observer – the battle against teaching evolution begins in Texas
  3. Tampa Bay Observer - the battle against evolution advances in Tampa, Florida

6th Grade Circumnavigation project

April 7th, 2008 by bholland

Now that you have charted your route, you’re ready to set sail. We will work on the first two days’ log entries as a group. After that, you’re on your own. You must make a minimum of 5 log entries (including the 2 that we will do in class). For each entry, you will need:

  1. Starting Position for the day
  2. Ending Position for the day
  3. Distance Covered
  4. Average Speed
  5. Wind Speed and Direction
  6. Sea State
  7. Additional Observation
  8. Chart to illustrate your Way Point
  9. Any other image that you find relevant

For your Additional Observations, you MUST include at least one of each of these:

  • Weather
  • Celestial Observation
  • Marine Life

We will be sailing on a Swan 51. Click here to see what your boat looks like. This boat averages between 6-7 knots in 15 knots of breeze. If it is windier, then you may be going as fast as 10-12 knots. If there is no wind, you could be doing as little as 2-3 knots. Remember that 1 knot = 1.15 miles per hour.

Links that you should use

Weather Forcasts: NWS Internet Weather Service, Weather Underground, Passage Weather, and Accu Weather International

Celestial Observations: Space.Com’s NightSky application, and GoogleSky

World Time Zones: map of the 24 hour clock from GMT
