KINDERGARTEN (AGE 5)
“SMCDS’s Kindergarten is like nothing I experienced as a child, nor should it be. The kids today need to be prepared in a much different way than I was raised, and SMCDS is preparing my child incredibly well.” Father of a SMCDS Kindergarten student, 2014.
Kindergarten is an exciting year of change. Our curriculum is planned to meet the social, emotional, academic and developmental needs of a five year-old. We keep a strong balance between structured work times and relaxed play and choice times. The academic portions of a our day include math, reading and thematic studies. The Singapore math program begins in kindergarten where children focus on developing number sense, beginning place value and are introduced to number bonds and the concepts of addition and subtraction.
A love of reading is fostered. Literacy skills are acquired through systematic phonics instruction which includes phonemic awareness activities and the development of a sight word fluency. Reading comprehension and vocabulary are taught through daily read alouds followed by discussions about story structure, prediction, and main idea. Fine motor skills and letter formation are taught with the continued use of the Handwriting Without Tears program. The thematic units studied in kindergarten include home, the forest habitat, fairy tales, castles and pond life. In addition to building a strong academic foundation, we spend a great deal of time helping children develop an understanding of their job in school.
The students learn about respecting others’ ideas, independent problem solving, cooperative learning and many other skills which factor into a child’s success in school. Kindergarteners participate weekly in French, art, library, physical education, science and creative movement classes taught by specialists who work closely with the classroom teachers and make connections to the learning that is occurring in the classroom.
