Homework Center

Homework Center is designed to provide 5th-8th grade students with additional organizational and academic support.  It is a supervised time for students to complete their homework with the active assistance of a teacher.  The program is held each week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 pm – 5 pm.  Pre-registration is required.

Program Expectations

Homework Center is not for everyone. Students will be expected to work in a quiet, collaborative, cooperative, and structured setting.  The offering is designed for those looking for additional support; this is not a substitute for extracurricular activities or socialization time.

Behavior Expectations

Students are expected to adhere to the rules of Homework Center, which is considered part of the school day, and the same rules apply.

Program Goals

Parent and staff communication plays a significant role in the program’s success. Parents are encouraged to share concerns about their child’s study habits and challenges and Homework Center staff will provide regular feedback to parents about their observations and suggestions. Some students may need help with a specific homework assignment, some may need help with time management and study skills strategies, and some just need a quiet place and structured setting to get their work done.

One of our goals is for students to complete most, if not all, of their homework so they can pursue other interests including enjoying quality family time.  We absolutely believe in the need for children to be children, to enjoy free and unstructured play, and have “down time.” With this in mind, Homework Center will include meaningful work time as well as several “brain breaks” during the 2-hour time frame.

Pre-Registration & Fees

Students may attend Homework Center one, two, or three days a week; however, in order to maintain a high quality program and low teacher to student ratio, parents are required to pre-register their child/children in advance of the upcoming week.  Since space is limited, pre-registration forms must be submitted by Thursday at 5:00 pm (the week prior) and parents will be notified of space availability by Friday at 5:00 pm.  The Homework Center fee is $10 per day, per student.  Parents will be billed on a monthly basis for registered days.

Communication:  Lauren Krieger will be the Homework Center teacher. In order for this program to be successful, open communication will be essential. She will offer feedback on your child’s progress, but parents should feel free to contact her at any time. lkrieger@smcds.org.

Waiting List / Cancellation

If necessary, there will be a waiting list. Cancellation for Homework Center must be received at least 24-hours in advance.  Parents can notify Lauren Krieger of any cancellations through email or calling 401-849-5970 ext 308.

Additional Details

Students should report to the Room 4 on the first floor of the Van Buren Building after they have packed up their belongings at dismissal time.  In order to get the most out of this program, students should remain at Homework Center until 5 pm.  At this time, Ms. Krieger will escort students to be picked up at the Gibbs Avenue entrance of the school.  If students are picked up earlier than 5 p.m., parents will need to walk into the building and pick up their child in room 4.  If students are not picked up by 5:10 p.m., they will be escorted to ESD, which is located in the Cottage, and parents will be charged a fee.
