The Girl’s “A” had a great game!! The weather was cold and raining, yet the Girl’s “A” didn’t let the weather ruin their game spirit. We played against Rocky Hill, and the score was close, 9-10. Daisy did a great job in goal even though she had an injury during the game. Amberlee did a great job even though she pulled her muscle during the game. We missed her towards the end, however our team pushed through the rain and cold, and scored some more goals. GO GIRLS “A”!!!!!

On Friday, April 16, the Boys “B” played their first game against Pennfield. The first goal of the game and the season was scored by Jake. SMS started in the lead until Pennfield tied the game at 1-1. We were put in the lead when Jack scored a goal, but that lead didn’t last, and Pennfield scored again, and the score was 2-2 by the fourth quarter. Finn won the face-off and within 8 seconds into the first quarter he scored and put SMS back on top. In the middle of the third quarter, Jake scored his second goal of the game, and at the very end of the game, Will scored his first goal. The ending results was SMS winning, 5-2. The game ball went to Danny playing a great game in goal.

By Student | - 6:29 pm - Posted in School News, Sports

On Tuesday, April 27, the Boys “B” played the “A” team from Rocky Hill. To start us off well, Corran scored his first, and the team’s first, goal of the game. Danny played a fantastic game as goalie, only letting in two goals and surprisingly almost scored while he was playing as goal keeper. The other scorers were Jackwith three goals, Jake with two, Scott with one, Finn with two, and Corran scoring his second goal at the end of the game. We did have a lot of scorers, but the game ball did not go to one of them. Instead, the game ball went to Morgan. Though he had no goals, he made many assists, and also did a spinning routine, dodging about three people and still held the ball. The ending score was 10 to 2, and the Boys “B” have won their second game of the season and still haven’t lost any.

Holocaust Quiz Friday

Be able to list and explain Raul Hilberg’s six steps to mass murder:

Definition – Jews and other minorities are defined as “the other” through legalized discrimination.

Isolation – Through the accumulation of hundreds of anti-Jewish laws, social practices, living restrictions, property expropriation, Jews are marginalized in German society.

Emigration – Jews are encouraged through laws and terror to leave German territory.

Ghettoization – Jews are forcibly removed to segregated sections of Eastern European cities and are made to endure terrible living conditions.

Deportation – Jews are transported to death and concentration camps.

Mass Murder – Gassing, shooting, and confinement with forced labor are used to systematically kill Jews.

The question of why so many German people went along with Nazi policies seems to be answered by conformist behavior (not wanting to be perceived as non-conformist or cowardly) or by belief (a long held culture of anti-Semitism that made people think it was OK to harm the bad “others”). The Nazis’ small steps also contributed to people’s moral decline by involving them in a steady process of increasingly abusive behavior toward Jews.

1.  We said earlier in class that a person with integrity is one who adheres to a code of moral values .  Using this definition, decide whether or not Atticus is a person of integrity.  In a well-written essay, use Atticus’s words and actions to show me what you believe.  If you want to see a potential outline for this, click here.

2.  Scout and Jem learn that one must have respect for individuals.  Explain how they learned about respect for the individual from three of the following characters:  Boo Radley, Mrs. Dubose, Atticus, Mr. Raymond, Cal, Aunt Alexandra or Tom Robinson.  In a well-written essay tell what Scout and Jem learn from each of the three other characters whom you have chosen and how they learn it.  In conclusion, explain what they have learned tells us about the two children.  For a potential outline, click here.

3. Several times Atticus tells Jem and Scout that in order to understand a person you need to walk in his or her shoes or be in his or her skin.  Using Boo Radley, Mayella Ewell, and Tom Robinson as examples, explain why this is a valuable lesson for the children.  For a potential outline, click here.

It was a bright and sunny afternoon on April 23, 2010 when Girls’ B took on Wheeler. We struggled throughout the first half with only two goals, but as the game progressed into the second half we added six more goals to the score board. These goals were scored by Annie, Allie, Issy, Charlotte, Ally, and Maddie. We also had great goaltending by Victoria, and Annie. Still, these eight goals were not enough to pull out a win for Girls B. The final score was 11-8 Wheeler.

Your power point presentation project includes and overall claim or question and three supporting questions that will help you to make you claim or answer your question. The first step of your project is to research the answer to your first supporting question. Create a keynote slide (up to a few slides would also be OK) to help explain what you found. On the keynote menu also look under the icon “view” and choose “presenter notes.” Then you can type notes only for yourself below the slide, which seen by your audience.

When you prepare your slides, “frame” the topic of the question so that the audience has a way to understand the details that follow. Then make sure that your details are made very clear for your audience. Use the slide to amplify the big idea (use very few words, but instead mostly pictures and a few that show the idea with some emotion!)

— TKM,  chapters 26-31 questions due.

Chapter 26
  • In her lesson on Hitler, Miss Gates says that “we (American people) don’t believe in persecuting anyone”. What seems odd to the reader about this claim?
  • Why is Scout puzzled by Miss Gates’ disapproval of Hitler?
  • Why does Scout’s question upset Jem? Is there a simple answer, or any answer, to the question (“How can you hate Hitler an’ then turn around an be ugly about folks right at home?”)

Chapter 27
  • What three things does Bob Ewell do that alarm Aunt Alexandra?
  • Why, according to Atticus, does Bob Ewell bear a grudge? Which people does Ewell see as his enemies, and why?
  • What was the purpose of the Halloween pageant? What practical joke had persuaded the grown ups to have an organized event?

Chapter 28
  • Comment on the way this chapter reminds the reader of earlier events in the novel.
  • Why does Jem say that Boo Radley must not be at home? What is ironic about this? (Is it true? Does he really mean it? Why might it be important for him and Scout that Boo should not be at home?)
  • Scout decides to keep her costume on while walking home. How does this affect her understanding of what happens on the way?
  • Why had Atticus not brought a chair for the man in the corner? Who might this stranger be?

Chapter 29
  • What causes the “shiny clean line” on the otherwise “dull wire” of Scout’s costume?
  • What explanation does Atticus give for Bob Ewell’s attack?
  • What does Heck Tate give as the reason for the attack?
  • Do you think the sheriff’s explanation or Atticus’s is the more likely to be true?

Chapter 30
  • Who does Atticus think caused Bob Ewell’s death?
  • Why does Heck Tate insist that Bob Ewell’s death was self-inflicted? In what way is this partly true?
  • Is Heck Tate right to spare Boo then publicity of an inquest? Give reasons for your answer.
  • How does the writer handle the appearance, at the end of the story, of Boo Radley?

Chapter 31
  • How do the events of the final chapters explain the first sentence in the whole novel?
  • Comment on the way the writer summarizes earlier events to show their siginificance.
  • How does Scout make sense of an earlier remark of Atticus’s as she stands on the Radley porch?
  • How much of a surprise is it fo find what Boo Radley is really like? Has the story before this point prepared the reader for this discovery?
  • At the end of the novel, Atticus reads to Scout. Comment on his choice of story. Does it have any connection with themes earlier in the novel and in its ending?

Your power point presentation project includes and overall claim or question and three supporting questions that will help you to make you claim or answer your question. The first step of your project is to research the answer to your first supporting question. Create a keynote slide or slides to help explain what you found.

Use the slide to amplify the big idea (use very few words and pictures that show the idea with some emotion!)

BE SURE TO BRING YOUR COUPON BOOKS OR MONEY BACK ASAP.

For Tuesday, April 20th.  Read TKM, chapters 22-25 and answer the questions below.

Chapter 22
  • Although Atticus did not want his children in court, he defends Jem’s right to know what has happened. Explain, in your own words, Atticus’s reasons for this. (Look at the speech beginning, “This is their home, sister”.
  • Miss Maudie tells Jem that “things are never as bad as they seem”. What reasons does she give for this view?
  • Why does Dill say that he will be a clown when he grows up? Do you think he would keep this ambition for long?
  • This story is set in the 1930s but was published in 1960. Have attitudes to racism remained the same (in the USA and the UK) or have there been any changes (for the better or worse) since then, in your view?
  • Why does Bob Ewell feel so angry with Atticus? Do you think his threat is a real one, and how might he try to “get” Atticus?

Chapter 23
  • What do you think of Atticus’s reaction to Bob Ewell’s challenge? Should he have ignored Bob, retaliated or done something else?
  • What is “circumstantial evidence”? What has it got to do with Tom’s conviction?
  • What does Atticus tell Scout about why the jury took so long to convict Tom?
  • Why does Aunt Alexandra accept that the Cunninghams may be good but are not “our kind of folks”? Do you think that people should mix only with others of the same social class? Are class-divisions good or bad for societies?
  • At the end of this chapter, Jem forms a new theory about why Boo Radley has never left his house in years. What is this? How likely is it to be true, in your opinion?

Chapter 24
  • Do you think the missionary ladies are sincere in worrying about the “Mrunas” (a tribe in Africa)? Give reasons for your answer.
  • Compare the reactions of Miss Maudie and the other ladies when Scout says she is wearing her “britches” under her dress.
  • What is your opinion of the Maycomb ladies, as depicted in this chapter?
  • Explain briefly how Tom was killed. What is Atticus’s explanation for Tom’s attempted escape. Do you think agree with Atticus?
  • How, in this chapter, do we see Aunt Alexandra in a new light? How does Miss Maudie support her?

Chapter 25
  • How does Maycomb react to the news of Tom’s death?
  • Comment on the idea that Tom’s death was “typical”?
  • Explain the contrast Scout draws between the court where Tom was tried and “the secret courts of men’s hearts”. In what way are hearts like courts?
  • Why did Jem not want Scout to tell Atticus about Bob Ewell’s comment? Was this a wise thing to ask her to do?

The score was always very close, but SMS lead the whole game but never by more then 3 goals. In the end, Girls A won with a final score of 12-9. For instance, if you are researching alliances your research question might be:

To what extent did alliances help to cause a world war?

Your three supporting questions to help answer the research question then might be:

1. Did France really intend to help Russia in its war against Germany and Austria-Hungary?

2. Was it the chance to use the Schlieffen plan or the fear of a French invasion that most motivated Germany to attack France?

3. Would Emperor Franz Joseph of have chosen to attack Serbia and invite a Russian invasion if Germany had not promised help to Austria-Hungary?
