This year at St. Michael’s, it has been very successful. The students have learned many lessons in school and out. Their goals have been set high for next year………
Plays:
The SMS Drama Group (directed by Mrs. Johnson) put on these plays during Artsfest:
- Pot Boiler/ A play about a play where the actors are the opposite of who they really are and has a horrible director
- My Name Is Leslie/ About a waitress who won’t serve anyone, so the customers starve.
- Words, Words, Words/ About monkeys in a jail cell
- Universal Language/ About a lady who takes lessons with a guy that talks gibberish, and the lady thinks that he’s speaking a real language
Arts
Other displays at Artsfest:
- The Butterfly Project (studio art) hung in the skylight lounge
- Egyptian jewelry (5th grade) clay bracelets, amulets, bangles, rings, and necklaces
- African Bags (4th grade) printed with African- style stamps that they made
- Islands (2nd grade) clay islands
- Fakes & Forgeries (5th grade) Oil pastel copies of famous artist’s works
- Fish (2nd Grade) Clay fish
- Household object Transformation (studio art) manmade objects covered with natural objects
- Birds & Birdhouses (3rd grade) 3D clay birdhouses & colored sketches
- Artist’s cards (Grades 1-7) Collages on playing cards
- Album art Look-alikes (Computer Graphics)
- Bottles & Personality collages (8th grade)
- Spiral Book bio (6th grade) a spiral book with layers that reflect that person’s life
- Shields (6th grade) colored sketches & felt shields on sack material
- 3-D paintings (Tech monkeys)
Performances in Artsfest:
- Mimi’s crew (jump roping, 1st-4th grade & Peter Carellas)
- Chorus/ directed by Ms. Langelo
- A band/ directed by Mr. Manchester
- B band/ directed by Mr. Manchester
Events:
- Travel to Puma City/ 4th grade and 6th grade to Boston to tour the Puma boats
- Hati presentation by Sam Alofsin
- Bouncing Bulldogs/ a jump roping group, very famous and competes in several competitions
- Earth day presentations (Middle School)/contest about the world’s pollution
- Field day (all school)/ Several games with 2 teams white and blue
- Poetry slam (5th grade)/ Went to a coffee house in Newport where the classes presented some of the poems they made
- Greek Feast (5th grade)/ kids would dress up as their god or hero and would create a presentation where they would present it at the lunchroom in front of parents, afterwards eating greek food and deserts
- Bazaar (3rd grade)/ homemade crafts that they would sell
- Battle of the books (4th grade)/ you had to read 15 books and then compete at a school against neighboring places
- Trip to D.C. (8th grade)/ tour trip around D.C
- Egyptian Play (5th grade)/ kids put on on a play about the life of Hatsepshut
- African Festival (4th grade)/ Presentation about different places in Africa and then eat African food
- Geo bee (4th-8th Grade, Winner Steven Deleo!)
- Spelling Bee (4th-8th grade, Winner Tim Howe!)
- Obama’s Inauguration/ Projector showing (live) the inauguration
- Popsicle towers (8th grade) In science the kids made towers which they then tested the strength of it by putting weights on it. (highest was 700 pounds)
- 6th grade History fair/
- Drama/Tech Marten Luther King Junior show
Kid Sport Stars:
- Ben (5th grade, skier)
- Jamie (5th grade, Hockey)
- India ( 7th grade, Sailing)
- Caroline (8th grade, Tennis)
- Stathi (8th grade, Tennis)
- Tory (6th grade, traveled around the world)
Organizations we supported:
- Hati Happy Houses/ Raised enough money to build a Happy House for a homeless family in Hati. We raised 600 dollars.
- Flying Kites/ An orphanage in Kenya, Africa
- Mrs. Martin Transplant Fund/transportation and medical care/ To help a former 3rd grade teacher
- Potter league/ We raised enough money to earn us a plaque
- Martin Luther KIng Center/ Donated cans
- Ophelia foundation/ Donated clothes
- American Heart Foundation/ Raised money from jump roping on Field Day
- We also gave books to kids in South Africa.
