As we are making our journey through Africa, we like to raise money through bake sales and dress down days for a charity that is important to us. Please view the following websites to see what charity you would like to donate to. After researching, we will vote on which charity we will raise money for.

As we are moving deeper into Africa and you have chosen your countries, here are some websites that will help you gather the information you need and guide you through you project.
Here is a list of directions you may need to refer back to when working on your African country project.
***GOALS***
-gather information independently from websites
-put information in your own words
-be able to interpret the information to put into a creative writing paragraph in the classroom.
-use Lonely Planet http://www.lonelyplanet.com/africa to help you find great information on your country such as when to go, weather, places to visit, etc…This is the BEST site to use when researching your project.
Afripedia http://www.africa.com/afripedia—click on the facts and figures section of the website (top left corner) to find basic information about your country or the encyclopedia section of your country as your guides to help you find appropriate for your research.

We have been very busy in our study of Africa. We have explored the northern, western and central regions. The students have compiled many informative summaries of the people, animals, terrain, tribes, and way of life in these regions. They have also created interesting and informative mini-projects about a specific cultural aspect or country in the areas. When we return from holiday break, we will begin our studies and eastern and southern Africa. We have asked the children to be thinking of the country in Africa that they wish to explore for their in-depth study. They will choose their country when we return. We can’t wait to get started!
Please check your child’s backpack. They have received an optional math packet to complete over break. There are some incentives for them to work on all of the concepts we have studied since September.
Congratulations to Zoe and Mimi as they will represent the 4th grade in the school Geo-Bee on January 5,2012 at 8am. Good luck girls!
Batlle of the Books is cruising along. Keep reading over break! Remember a minimum of 15 books is required.
We want to wish all of your families a wonderful holiday and Happy New Year!
See you all in 2012!

We had a wonderful celebration of our nationalities today! The children enjoyed sharing and tasting foods from different countries. Many thanks for all the contributions and delicious food. The children were raving about it all afternoon. A big thanks to Julie Fisher for organizing and all the parents who were able to volunteer.

We have started our in-depth study of the continent of Africa. We will study the 5 regions of Africa. In preparation for our final project, each child will be required to produce a mini-presenation about an aspect of each region. All research will be done in school during class and technology lab time.
